Crack in the Ground

The upcoming holiday weekend looks pretty nice, but it's been drizzly today.  While that is good news for the trails, it makes me want to escape to the desert in the meantime. If you ever find yourself in such a situation, go check out Crack in the Ground-  another interesting geological formation in the Oregon desert. It's found north of Christmas Valley about 10 miles up a washboarded but passable road.  Or, with a good map and somewhat rugged vehicle, you can drive down from Bend or highway 20. Crack in the Ground is just that, a crack in the floor of the desert.  You can hike along the bottom of it for a couple of miles and check out the nooks and crannies.  It's a good stop on a tour with Fort Rock, or some of the other lava caves or cinder cones in the area.

Springtime!

It seems like springtime finally has a grip on the high desert.   The forecast looks good and the place is really greening up.  I've enjoyed watching the birds at the feeder all winter, and now there are more and different varieties.  Bend always has interesting birds like jays, quail, and doves, but I've been enjoying these pretty grosbeaks lately.  They squabble a lot and will not hesitate to smack a window.  This guy knocked himself silly at my friend's house.  Fortunately he was able to dart off again after a couple of hours.
